Hey Brock, did it make you very nervous drilling those last two tuner holes?

I did that for him Dave.
When brock got it it was relatively ready to go. He had to shape the nut area a little, but I never let anything go out needing more than a re-slotting for frets, hopefully. That said, I am going to start working around the slots in future inlays. It takes more time, but I think people that already using me are willing to pay for it.
We'll see!

Thanks for the pic Brock!
I need to go draw out mosquito larvea!

Do either of you have a pic of it with the tuners on? I'd love to see the finished product!

That is just such a classy inlay. I wish I would have thought of it. Guess my lack of class is showing again.

If I had thought of it she'd be riding a dolphin or something...
The best part of doing art based on others requests is that you are constantly forced to see into others minds, and visions. I would have never done this one on my own!

Funny, I would guess many people wouldn't consider Madonna as classy. That said the fact the inlay is black, white, and gold does add class to it. It's also not SO "Madonna" looking. I had people say "that's not Madonna- It's Marylin!"
That's fine with me. Madonna is really the Marylin of our time in many ways, so if I blurred the lines then it is even more cool.

Sorry, I don't have any finished pics. I can tell you this, the guitar parts I had were incredible. Brock KNOWS how to make a guitar, based on what I got!

I didn't mention this the first time this particular inlay was shown, because, in comparing one person's work to another's, it's so easy to cause offense when you really mean it as a compliment. Here goes, anyway...Your Madonna/Marilyn inlay reminds me most of the elegant work that Larivee used to put on most of their headstocks. Each was unique, so I guess the "time is money" issue is the reason they stopped. If I remember correctly, Larivee is where Grit (and most other Canadian luthiers) got his early training, so that's where we get the family resemblance. In any case, beautiful work!

Grit did work with Jean in the early days.
I wasn't aware they had stopped their female headstocks?
Most likely they are just an upcharge. I know All of the engraving was done by hand by Jean's wife, on each piece.
It's interesting to me this reminds you of that work. It's SO different. It's a girl on a headstock, but the mood is way off. To me anyway
I'm glad you see a family resemblance though!

Class 5 is up. I'll work on the next one soon. I'm still drawing an inlay for another OLFER. This has GOT to be the most painstaking one I have ever done. That is if he likes it .

Craig,

Yeah, it's probably a special-order item now. Their volume no-doubt precludes inlay.

There is a difference in mood between this inlay and what Larivee used to do, but I don't see it as far removed from Larivee as from Laskin, who's work usually seems to be ironic or playful, without a hint of romance or spirituality. It's sometimes surprising (and maybe frustrating) how people interpret your art, isn't it?

Yeah, I can shoot one later tonight. I have it just about ready to go to finishing... but the tuners are still in it. :-)

Both Laskin and Linda Manzer are ex-Larrivee. Great guitar makers and great inlay artists. Larrivee uses CNC for the inlay but I think that Craig is correct that Wendy does do the engraving still. They, like most companies, do do custom work on request, if you have an open wallet.

I'll try to get that article copied tonight or tomorrow for those who want it.

I have hit a dead area of the hurricane. The winds have died down a bit. It's NOT the eye, so I am hopeing it's almost over for my area. I still have power obviously!
Get those pics up!

I am dying to see the full guitar!

Hey Craig'

in the imortal words of Daffy Duck "Batten down them hatches" Porky Pig "I did batten down the hatches" Daffy Duck "Well...Batten 'em down again WE'LL TEACH THOSE HATCHES!" Hope you're fairing OK. I used to live on the Coast (I am now 90 miles inland of my last place) and we would get steady 80 knots gusting 100 knots once or twice a winter. They pretty much sew the roofs on in Prince Rupert otherwise they are just changed every winter!

I am going to e-mail you that Laskin article, maybe you can download it before the power goes out and read it by candle light. It is in Acrobat Reader (.pdf) and every page is a new file because I am a computer morron. To make it more interesting pages 1 and 3 are upside-down. A scanner issue! But once you open the file you can rotate in the VIEW drop down. I rotated it and then re-saved it but it seems to revert back to the top down position....remember...computer morron?

Hope you find it informative. By the way, I am a fish person. I worked for 10 years as a fisheries manager for our federal fisheries department and have a done a lot of research and pleasure diving, I just think fish are cool! I think your fish stuff is awesome and if my guitars become any good you may see some of my headplate and fret boards!

Anthony, it's on its way to you also!

Enjoy

Shane

My neighbors car took a tree, and so did a few others. But I am here.

Anyway- send those PDF's!
I can read them in real light

Hey Craig,

I couldn't scan them down small enough and I couldn't figure out how to shrink them. SO I printed them off. PM me your address and I will put it in the mail. Sorry about that, Two hours at it was enough for me.
